Colby Defeats Wesleyan, 13-7Game held on Saturday, October 9, 1999 in Middletown, Conn.Game Notes: Holding Wesleyan to just one first-quarter TD and stopping a last-minute Wesleyan drive inside its own 10-yard line, Colby hung on to defeat its host, 13-7. Colby won for the first time in three outings this season while Wesleyan fell from the ranks of the undefeated, now 2-1. With the score tied early in the second half, Colby defensive back Lee Carlson stepped in front of a Jake Fay pass at the Wesleyan 20 yard line and returned it to the Wesleyan three. Three plays later, Jon Murray had his second TD of the game on a two-yard run and Colby went ahead to stay, 13-7, as the extra point hit the upright. Wesleyan had two substantial second-half drives, but one ended in a Jason Brooks interception at the goalline after Wesleyan reached the Colby 18 with seven minutes to play. The final drive, coming after Wesleyan blocked a 38-yard field goal try with 1:38 to go, featured a 37-yard pass from Fay to Matt Perceval, who had his third straight 100-yard receiving game with 11 catches for 121 yards. Perceval was tripped up at the Colby nine-yard line with 58 seconds to go. From there, Fay was sacked for the fifth time in the contest and Wesleyan moved back another five yards via penalty. Perceval caught a nine-yarder and after a spike, a fourth-and-goal pass from Fay to Perceval came up short as time expired. Colby had a 60-yard drive on eight plays early in the second quarter to even the score at 7-7 on Murray's one-yard TD run. Key plays in the drive were a 19-yard connection from Matt Smith to Andy Tripp, and a 16-yard halfback pass from Murray to Smith. Wesleyan's lone score was a one-yard run by Larry Woolard after Wesleyan recovered a Colby muffed punt at the Colby 15-yard line. Wesleyan outgained Colby, 320-167, had 18 first downs to Colby's nine and had a five-minute advantage in time of possession, but four take-aways by Colby, including the key Carlson interception, proved to be the difference. Wesleyan entered the game averaging 31 points and 438 yards during its first two contests.
