Game Notes:
Scoring 15 fourth-quarter points behind the running of QB Troy Robinson and fullback Dave Cottrell, Wesleyan rallied from an 18-7 deficit to capture a 22-18 victory at Hamilton.
Robinson engineered fourth-quarter marches of 59 and 71 yards to put Wesleyan ahead, 19-18, with 2:38 remaining. He capped the first drive by going in from nine yards out for his second TD of the game. Dave Cottrell, who led the Wesleyan ground game with 26 carries for 116 yards, put Wesleyan in the lead for good with a one-yard burst. Robinson also surpassed the century mark on the ground with 21 attempts for 103 yards while completing 10 of 18 passes for 96 yards.
The Wesleyan win overshadowed a good third-quarter effort by Hamilton as the Continentals scored 18 straight points after Wesleyan took an initial 7-0 lead in the second quarter on Robinson's three-yard run. Hamilton made it 7-5 at halftime with a 37-yard Jeff Holden field goal and a safety. A 52-yard screenp ass to Eric Macrina, who broke three tackles on his way to the endzone, put Hamilton, now 0-2 on the year, ahead, 12-7. Scott Milleinsen, who did not start the game, but paced Hamilton on the ground with 130 yards on 19 carries, broke over the middle untouched for a 33-yard TD run with 2:14 to go in the third period for the 11-point Hamilton edge.
But Wesleyan's offense regained control in the fourth quarter, and a Dan Durkin interception and 16-yard return to the Hamilton 14 set up a 24-yard Josh Stein field goal for the final points of the afternoon. Though Hamilton mounted one more march, moving from the Hamilton 38 to the Wesleyan 45, the Wesleyan defense held on downs to secure the win.
Wesleyan raised its record to 2-0 on the year.
