Game Notes:

Quarterback Troy Robinson completed 12 of 20 passes for 115 yards and one TD while running for 52 yards on 12 carries with a pair of TDs, complemented by the 159-yard and one TD rushing effort of fullback Dave Cottrell on 28 attempts as Wesleyan defeated Tufts, 27-6, here in the opening game for both teams.

Robinson put Wesleyan ahead for good at 4:20 of the first quarter, hitting tight end Jeff Wilner with a seven-yard TD pass, capping a seven-play, 55-yard drive. Tufts made it 7-6 with 2:14 left in the half as QB Wayne Pandolph hit Jeff Soderquist with a 30-yard strike on a 4th-and-10 play, but Wilner blocked the extra point to keep Wesleyan ahead.

Robinson then engineered a 58-yard march in 1:23, covering the final 18 yards himself as Wesleyan led 14-6 at intermission.

A 34-yard run by Cottrell on 4th-and-two capped the opening drive of the second half as Wesleyan pulled ahead 21-6 and a one-yard sneak by Robinson with 2:44 remaining in the third quarter finished off a 35-yard drive after Tufts punter Mark Stonkus bobbled a snap, giving Wesleyan excellent field position.

Though Wesleyan allowed 306 yards, two key interceptions deep in Wesleyan territory helped the home team from allowing more than six points. Wesleyan totaled 342 yards on the day.

Tufts was led on the ground by halfback Brian Curtin, who netted 89 yards on 18 carries. Chris Mikulski paced Tufts in the receiving end with eight catches for 80 yards.
