GAME NOTES
Sophomore fullback Josh Mason rushed 38 times for 271 yards, setting an Amherst single-game rushing record, and scored two TDs to lead Amherst to a 28-14 victory over Wesleyan.
Mason eclipsed the previous Amherst mark of 265 yards, set by Bob O'Brien in 1973, also against Wesleyan. In addition, Mason, who led the NESCAC in rushing at the time, established an Amherst seasonal rushing record of 754 yards with three games remaining in the season. Mark Vendetti held the previous record of 713 yards, set in 1982.
Mason got things rolling for Amherst on the Lord Jeffs' sixth play from scrimmage as he bolted 65 yards off the left side for the game's opening TD at 9:49. Amherst made it 13-0 when halfback Kwame Brathwaite completed a 71-yard, 11-play drive with a 22-yard run at 13:44 of the second period. Brathwaite made it a two-TD afternoon as well with a 15-yard scamper at 2:22 of the second quarter as he finished with 83 yards on 15 attempts. Mason made it 28-0 at 9:25 of the third quarter with a three-yard run as Amherst drove 79 yards with the opening kickoff of the second half. Amherst ended the game with 371 yards on the ground and 449 yards of total offense while Wesleyan managed 121 yards on the ground and 279 yards of total offense.
Wesleyan got on the board twice in the final 16 minutes, getting a four-yard run from fullback Dave Cottrell and a seven-yard run from QB Scott Hevesy. Both runs completed substantial drives of 56 and 77 yards, respectively.
With the win, Amherst improved to 4-1 on the year and ended a four-game losing streak against Wesleyan, which fell to 1-4 on the season.
