GAME NOTES
Junior fullback Dave Cottrell became the all-time career rushing leader at Wesleyan when he collected 116 yards on 28 carries and scored the clinching TD on a four-yard run at 9:03 of the third period as Wesleyan defeated Bowdoin, 29-21.
With 601 yards on 143 attempts this season, Cottrell now has 1,957 yards in his career, breaking the record of Dave Revenaugh, who graduated in 1972 with 1,895 yards to his credit.
Wesleyan took advantage of five Bowdoin turnovers, three on fumbles and two interceptions, converting three into TDs. Jason Cooper also ran a kickoff back 80 yards for a TD, the first Wesleyan player to do so since Tony Garver went 82 yards against Amherst in 1987. Cooper added 58 yards rushing and scored on a nine-yard run in the second quarter, helping Wesleyan to a 19-14 lead at halftime.
Cottrell's TD run in the third period gave Wesleyan all the points it needed for the win with a 26-14 edge, though Wesleyan got two key sacks from Toros Maksoudian in the final two minutes to end a Bowdoin threat after Bowdoin reached the Wesleyan 14-yard line on its final drive. Bowdoin QB Ramon Martinez accounted for 206 yards of offense, completing 12 of 26 passes for 162 yards and three TDs and rushing 17 times for 44 yards. He lost 31 yards on the two sacks that turned the ball over to Wesleyan on downs with 1:25 to go.
Wesleyan improved to 2-4 on the year while Bowdoin, which lost to Wesleyan for a fifth straight time, fell to 1-5 on the season.
