Game Notes:
Fullback Dave Cottrell and the tailbacking duo of John Pascucci and Tom Themistocles combined for 175 yards on 33 carries and each scored one TD as Wesleyan (2-2) extended Bates's (0-4) losing streak to 35 games with a 23-16 victory. It was also the ninth consecutive victory for Wesleyan over Bates, dating back to 1983.
Bates, which last won during the 1990 season, has the nation's longest current losing streak among NCAA Division III teams.
In a game dominated by defense, Weleyan outgained its vicitor, 270-237, by holding the Bates running game to a net of 14 yards on 37 attempts. Bates QBs Chris Snow and Dan Hooley combined for 16 completions in 31 attempts for 223 yards but had three passes picked off, two by linebacker Dan Durkin. Wesleyan had just five sacks in the game, taking 47 yards away from the Bates offense. Three Wesleyan QBs collectively completed just six of 21 passes for 106 yards.
Wesleyan got its scoring on a one-yard run from Cottrell, a 12-yard scamper by Pascucci, and a 37-yard jaunt by Themistocles. Wesleyan took advantage of field position as its scoring drives covered just 47, 36, and 55 yards. Both Bates scores, coming on a 22-yard pass from Snow to Ryan MacDonald and a 12-yarder from Hooley to Tom Spiro, capped marches of 80 and 88 yards, respectively. Bates opened the scoring with a safety when Brendan Cullen sacked Wesleyan QB Scott Hevesy in the endzone. Wesleyan also got a 30-yard field goal from Rob Stager early in the fourth quarter.
