Matt Perceval, the leading receiver in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) made 13 catches for 227 yards and three TDs, including the only score in overtime on a six-yard reception, to lead Wesleyan (3-1) to a 36-29 victory over visiting Bates (1-3).
On the year, Perceval has 42 catches for 692 yards (16.5 yards a catch) and six TDs in four contests.
In a game that featured nearly 1,000 yards of total offense, Bates (516 yards) rallied from a 29-14 fourth-quarter deficit with an 11-play, 64-yard drive culminating in a 14-yard pass from Matt Bazirgan to Jason Coulie with 7:14 to play and an eight-play, 80-yard march ending in a 16-yard TD run by Paul Erickson with 1:26 to go. Erickson then caught the two-point conversion pass to even the score at 29-29. Erickson ended the game with 26 carries for 156 yards and two TDs while Coulie had 12 catches for 126 yards and two TDs. Bazirgan completed 23 of 39 passes for 218 yards.
Wesleyan QB Jake Fay was 23 of 35 for 343 yards and also led the team on the ground with 30 yards as Wesleyan amassed 452 yards on the afternoon.
In overtime, Wesleyan moved 25 yards on four plays as Fay connected with Perceval for nine yards, then George Thompson for 10. Fay then hit Perceval on a 2nd-and-goal pass from the six and Brian Walker added the extra point.
Bates ran seven plays in overtime, but stalled after reaching the 14 as an incompletion, a sack and two more failed passes ended the game.
Wesleyan's triumph extended its winning streak over Bates to 13 straight games, dating back to the 1982 season.
