LEWISTON, Me --- Frosh QB Brennan Carney completed 15 of 32 passes for 252 yards, including two fourth-quarter TDs to George Thompson of 27 and 37 yards, to lead Wesleyan to a 20-17 come-from-behind win over Bates College here this afternoon. The victory was Wesleyan's 14th in a row against Bates dating back to the 1982 season and improved Wesleyan to 3-1 on the season. Bates dropped to 0-4 on the year.
Wesleyan trailed 10-0 at halftime before running back Ronnie Jacobs capped a 62-yard drive on eight plays on the opening possession of the second half. Carrying the ball seven times for 55 yards during the march, Jacobs finished off the drive with a 29-yard run on a 4th-and-2 pitch play over the right side. For the game, Jacobs had 90 yards on 25 attempts. Wesleyan took the lead with 10 minutes to play when Carney found Thompson behind the defense for a 27-yard TD strike, finishing off a seven-play, 62-yard drive. Bates came right back to retake the lead 1:14 later when Sean Atkins (21 carries for 145 yards) broke over the right side for a 53-yard TD run. After starting at its own 45 following the kickoff, Wesleyan needed just two plays, both connections from Carney to Thompson, to go ahead 20-17 with the scoring play covering 37 yards. The extra point was blocked.
Bates had a final drive into Wesleyan territory during the final minute stopped when linebacker Dion Mueller intercepted Steve Barry's pass with Wesleyan's Ray Dolphin draped on Barry's legs. That pickoff, coming on a 3rd-and-11 play with 23 seconds to go at the Wesleyan 28, was returned 35 yards and gave Wesleyan a chance to run out the clock.
Bates had produced 10 points in the first half as an errant pitch on Wesleyan's opening play from scrimmage was recovered by Bates at the Wesleyan 10-yard line. On 4th-and-goal at the two-yard line, Bates lined up for a field goal but holder Owen Meihe stood up and ran left for the TD and a 7-0 lead. In the second quarter, Wesleyan drove to the Bates 10-yard line but Carney was sacked and lost the ball at the 20. Bates' Kevin Jackson picked up the loose ball and raced 60 yards to the Wesleyan 20. From there, Rejean Guerriero made good on a 30-yard field goal in the opening minute of the second quarter for a 10-0 Bates edge.
Wesleyan got a fine performance from Todd Themistocles as the wide receiver made nine catches for 132 yards. Thompson closed out the game with four receptions for 102 yards.
