Saturday, October 20, 2001 at Amherst, Mass.

Notes: Amherst got a leg up in the defending its Little Three title and extended its winning streak over Wesleyan to eight games behind a 23-0 victory. It was the third shutout of the season for the Lod Jeffs, who have yet to allow a TD this season through five games. Amherst has yielded just six points this year.

The game was a defensive struggle through the opening 27 minutes as neither team got inside the opponent's 30-yard line until Amherst mounted a 55-yard, five-play drive that started with 3:09 left in the half. Okey Ugwonali broke off a 24-yard run to put Amherst at the Wesleyan 31. Three plays later, QB Marsh Moseley, who split time with Jeff Browne, hit J.P. Vito down the middle for 32 yards to the Wesleyan two-yard line. Ugwonali crack over the left side for the TD and the extra point was missed. Three Wesleyan turnovers, all on interceptions, cost the Cardinals field position in the first half but did not lead to points. Wesleyan forced Amherst to punt seven time in the first half.

Amherst added three points with its opening drive of the second half, consuming over five minutes before settling for a 30-yard Dave Bodner field goal. From that point, the Amherst defense took over, holding Wesleyan to just seven completions for 42 yards and only eight rushes which produced just 10 yards. In the meantime, Ugwonali added 86 yards in the second half to finish with 138 on 28 carries, and Fletcher Ladd added 79 as the two combined for 218 of Amherst's 245 rushing yards. For the game, Amherst totaled 413 yards while Wesleyan came up with just 165. Wesleyan deepest penetration of the game came in the closing minutes when Wesleyan got to the Amherst 24, but a fourth-down pass play came up short and Amherst, which enjoyed a 21:18 - 8:42 time-of-possession advantage in the second half, added two TDs passes as Moseley hit Matt Flavin from 18 yards out to cap a six-play, 57-yard drive late in the third quarter, and a 21-yard strike to Derrell Wright, ending a seven-play, 45-yard series midway through the final period.
