NotesSenior George Thompson (Virginia Beach, Va.) caught a 33-yard TD strike from sophomore Brennan Carney (South Burlington, Vt.) with :39 to play to lift Wesleyan (2-1) past Colby (1-2), 27-23. Thompson ended the day with six receptions for 103 yards.

Trailing 23-20 and getting the ball back at its own 15-yard line following a Colby punt with 2:00 to go, Wesleyan marched down field as Carney completed four passes for 70 yards, including the final 33-yarder to Thompson in the right edge of the endzone on a 3rd-and-10 play. On the preceeding play, Thompson had broken behind the Colby defense and dropped a ball in the left corner of the endzone.

Colby, which racked up 361 yards on the afternoon, had taken a 23-20 lead with 4:05 to go, driving 70 yards on 10 plays, capped by a one-yard QB sneak by junior Pat Conley (Bath, Maine). Conley ended the day with 15 completions in 36 attempts for 196 yards. He also rushed eight times for 35 yards. Senior Danny Noyes (Silver Lake, N.H.) paced the Colby receiving corps with 10 catches for 155 yards.

Carney completed 15 of 32 passes for 216 yards and two TDs for Wesleyan , but was intercepted three times.

The first Wesleyan TD of the day resulted on a one-yard run by Young Douglas in the opening five minutes of the game. Colby failed to get off a punt when the punter couldn't handles a low snap and was tackled for a 13-yard loss by Wesleyan's Ben Henry. The Cardinals had just 15 yards to go for a 6-0 lead as the extra point hit the upright. After Colby moved ahead 13-6 in the second quarter, Wesleyan evened the count at 13-13 when Douglas concluded a 59-yard, nine-play drive early in the third period. Wesleyan forged a 20-13 lead when Carney hit senior Larry Woolard (Middletown, Conn.) with a pass and the fullback would not be dinied the endzone as he powered his way for 15 yards.
