Wesleyan 21, at Hamilton 0
Saturday, September 29, 2001 at Clinton, N.Y.
Notes: Sophomore running back Young Douglas (Westbrook, Conn.) scored two TDs on runs of seven and 65 yards to spearhead the Wesleyan offense in a 21-0 shutout win over Hamilton. It was the Cardinals' first shutout since planting a goosegg on Amherst during the 1988 season. Douglas ended the game with 114 yards on 10 carries as Wesleyan had 162 yards rushing on the day. With a balanced attack, sophomore QB Brennan Carney (South Burlington, Vt.) completed 14 of 30 passes for 150 yards and a TD, that going to senior Todd Themistocles (Hanover, Mass.). Themistocles ended the game with nine catches for 94 yards, including the nine-yard TD with 2:46 to go in the third quarter, making it 14-0. After forcing a Hamilton punt following the kickoff, Wesleyan took over at its 35-yard line. From there, Douglas spun away from a would-be Hamilton tackler near the line of scrimmage and raced up the right sideline for the third Wesleyan TD at 1:30 of the period. Wesleyan's first TD came on a 12-play, 75-yard march in the second quarter that consumed just 3:36 on the clock as Carney completed five passes for 58 yards during the series that culminated in a seven-yard TD burst by Douglas. Hamilton got its share of yardage with 164 on the ground, led by senior Chris Weeden (32-145) and 98 in the air, had 17 first downs to Wesleyan's 14 and had a 13-minute advantage in time of possession. But the Wesleyan defense came up with five turnovers featuring two interceptions by junior Steve Woodruff (Bridgewater Mass.), one coming after Hamilton reached the Wesleyan six-yard line with a 1st-and-goal midway through the fourth quarter. The win was the fifth straight by Wesleyan over Hamilton.
