NotesJunior running back Keven Kelley (Natick, Mass.) rushed 27 times for 168 yards and two TDs to lead Tufts (1-0) to a 35-20 opening-day win over Wesleyan (0-1). The win snapped a five-game Tufts losing streak to Wesleyan, dating back to 1991, and ended Wesleyan's string of consecutive opening-day victories at six. Tufts used capable running attack to pick up 315 yards as Tufts had a 20-minute advantage in time of possession. Junior Chuck McGraw added 78 yards on 17 carries. Though junior QB Scott Treacy threw for just 74 yards, he completed 10 of 17 passes with three TDs, one going to McGraw and others to Bryan Pitko and Ryan Papi. On the day the Tufts offense collected 389 yards. Wesleyan managed 338 yards of its own, most on the arm of sophomore QB Brennan Carney (South Burlington, Vt.), who completed 22 of 43 passes for 298 yards and three TDs. Senior George Thompson paced the Wesleyan receiving corps with eight catches for 142 yards and two TDs. Senior Todd Themistocles had seven receptions for 91 yards. Tufts scored three consecutive TDs on three straight possessions in the third period to pull away from a 14-14 tie as a four-play, 65-yard drive ended in a 40-yard run up the middle by Kelley with 12:07 to go, putting the visitors ahead for good, 21-14. Tufts ended the period with its most impressive drive of the day, a 13-play, 72-yard march that consumed nearly six minutes and culminated in a five-yard Kelley run, putting Tufts up, 35-14.
