Williams 31, at Wesleyan 7

Saturday, November 3, 2001 at Middletown, Conn.

Notes: Williams used a balanced, ball-control offense to roll up 487 yards and give head coach Dick Farley, in his 15th season, his 100th career victory as Williams prevailed over Wesleyan, 31-7, here this afternoon in a game tevelised regionally on NESN. Farley, the third winningest active coach in NCAA Division III at the start of the 2001 season, now stands 100-16-3, a winning percentage of .853.

Williams led 10-0 at the end of the first quarter as the Ephs collected 150 yards of offense and mounted a 51-yard march that resulted in a 35-yard Scott Farley field goal, then drove 65 yards on six plays for a TD, that a 38-yard burst up the middle by Tyler Shea on a 4th-and-1 play.

After Williams held Wesleyan deep in its own territory, thanks mainly to two sacks from Will McGrath, Williams took over at the Wesleyan 33-yard line and needed just four plays to make it 17-0 on the first play of the second quarter as Joe Reardon (15-of-23 passing, 165 yards) hit Ryan Friend from 15 yards out. Williams outgained Wesleyan, 150-1 in the opening 15 minutes.

Wesleyan struck quickly after that for its only points of the afternoon as Brennan Carney (11-of-36, 175 yards) hit George Thompson on passes of 37 and 34 yards on the left side, the second one coming in the endzone for Thompson's eighth TD catch of the season. Thompson finished the game with three catches for 87 yards.

Williams tacked on another TD before intermission when Jamaal Mobley caught a two-yarder from Reardon to cap an 11-play, 60-yard march. During the drive, Michael Hackett, who finished the game with 112 yards rushing on 23 carries, had four runs for 22 yards.

The final score came on a trick play as Reardon handed off to Farmey running left to right on an end-around. Farley then handed off to Ryan Friend on the reverse and Friend pulled up to throw a 16-yard TD strike to a wide-open Reardon on the left side of the endzone. That play concluded Williams' longest drive of the day, a 70-yard, 11-play series that used 4:48. For the game, Williams enjoyed a 38:30 - 21:30 edge in time of possession.

Williams, now 7-0 on the year and 1-0 in the Little Three, entertains Amherst College, also, 7-0 and 1-0 in the Little Three, in a showdown next Saturday in Williamstown. Wesleyan (4-3) finishes up at Trinity (3-4) next Saturday.
