With 36 lettermen and 13 starters back, led by team tri-captains Zach Librizzi '08 (QB, #12), Tom Addonizio '08 (DT, #63) and Tim O'Callaghan '08 (LB, #45), the Cardinals will open the 2007 football season by hosting Middlebury Sat., Sept. 22. Before that, the team will have a controlled scrimmage at Trinity Sept. 15. Librizzi, one of NESCAC's most experienced quarterbacks with 19 games started during his opening three seasons, should continue to be one of the conference leaders in total offense. He averaged 173.2 yards a contest in 2006. O'Callaghan ranked second on the squad in tackles a year ago with 77 and was fourth in the NESCAC with his 9.6 stops a contest. Addonizio added 13 stops including 1.5 sacks. Second-team all-NESCAC receiver Ryan Walsh '09 (44 catches, 557 yards) and Mark Noonan '08 will pace the receiving corps while linemen Brett Valentine '09, Bobby Rosenthal '10, Alex Zedlovich '09 and Andrew Erlagen '10 give the Cardinals a veteran crew up front. Tyler Whitley '08, Andrew Fiola '09 and Drew Dominguez '09 are likely to anchor the defensive backfield. Wesleyan has experience and talent at both punter (A.J. Taucher '08) and placekicker (Chris Helsel '09). Wesleyan will look to extend its rise back to the upper echelon of the NESCAC as close road losses to Middlebury (10-7) and Colby (24-21) left the 2006 squad shy of a winning mark with a 3-5 record. The team has suffered just three losing seasons in the last nine with a cumulative mark of 42-38 over the stretch.
