Strong Veteran Squad to Take the Field for the Cardinals in 2008, Seeking Top Honors in NESCAC

Wesleyan Football 2008 tri-captains

Team tri-captains Drew Dominguez '09 (#21, main photo), Andrew Fiola '09 (#24, photo insert lower right) and Vince Colangelo '09 (#41, photo insert upper left) will lead an experienced Cardinal squad on the gridiron in 2008. With 45 lettermen, 19 of whom were starters, back from a 4-4 team in 2007, Wesleyan will be both talented and deep across the board. Dominguez and Fiola will anchor the defensive backfield while Colangelo is one of a solid group of veteran linebackers. He led the team in total tackles a year ago with 74. Dominguez had 38 tackles and three interceptions while Fiola also picked off three passes and racked up 26 stops. Also returning as a defensive starter is Peter Sugarbaker '10 (DT), Pete Overman '09 (LB), Justin Freres '11 (DB), Joe Chadwick '10 (DB), Rob Cook '10 (LB), and Dominic Gibson '10 (LB). Back on offense is the entire line of Brett Valentine '09, Bobby Rosenthal '10, Andrew Erlagen '10, Nick Seara '11 and Garrett Rodgers '11. Second-team all-NESCAC receiver Ryan Walsh '09 (35-573) will be joined by Kevin Leamy '09 as returnees. Shea Dwyer '10 (111-351) is back as the tailback while Mike Ferris '09 was last year's starting tight end. Chris Helsel '09 has been handling most of the team's placekicking for the last three seasons and also sees time as a receiver. Dominguez was the target man for both kickoff and punt returns in 2007. Joe Giaimo '11, who is a top candidate to replace four-year starting QB Zach Librizzi '08, who earned second-team all-NESCAC honors last year, did most of the holding for placekicks a year ago. Wesleyan inaugurates the 2008 campaign on the road at Tufts Sat., Sept. 20. The game should be webcast by JumboCast and a link to see the game will be posted on the athletics web site under "webcasts."
