Kevin Leamy '09 Ties Team Record for Catches in a Game as Cards Give Amherst a Run for Its Money
With Blake DuBois '12 (#19, left side of photo) completing 26 of 45 passes for 202 yards and a TD, Kevin Leamy '09 (#29, right side of photo) was on the receiving end of 14 offerings to tie a Wesleyan team record for catches in a game as the Cardinals hosted Amherst during Homecoming/Family Weekend celebration Sat., Oct. 18. Wesleyan took its first lead over Amherst since defeating the Lord Jeffs in 2002 when Chris Helsel '09 booted a 22-yard field goal with 3:39 left in the second quarter for a 10-7 Cardinal advantage. The Cardinal TD came on a six-yard connection from DuBois to Vince Miller '12 earlier in the second period. But the Lord Jeffs came back to tie the game just before halftime and scored the only TD of the defensive-minded second half with 12:48 to play and pulled out a 17-10 victory. Leamy amassed 96 receiving yards from his record-tying performance as he matched the mark set by Mike Muraca vs. both Tufts and Hamilton during the 1990 campaign. Wesleyan drove into Amherst territory during two possessions in the game's last five minutes but Lord Jeff interceptions ended both threats, including the final one with just :07 remaining. In holding Amherst to 17 points, Wesleyan remains the only NESCAC squad to yield no more than 20 points in any game this season. Leading the defense vs. Amherst with 12 tackles was Cyprian Oyomba '12 while Dominic Gibson '10 racked up 10 stops. The team's next opponent will be Bowdoin Sat., Oct. 25 for a game in Middletown. The contest will be webcast with details for watching on the athletics web site under "Webcasts." (photos courtesy of SteveMcLaughlinPhotography.com).
