Posting a 73 each day of the two-day Duke Nelson Invitational hosted by Middlebury Sat. and Sun., Sept. 15 & 16, Dave Velardo '08 (photo) placed third of 128 golfers to pace Wesleyan. As a team, the Cardinals had a 654 total to rank 20th of 25 scoring teams. Eli Wilson '09 was Wesleyan's number-two performer with a 160 total including a solid 73 on day two. Velardo's 146 score is the lowest ever recorded by a Wesleyan golfer in the 12 years the Cardinals have been attending the 24-year Duke Nelson Invitational. Her round of 80 on Sunday tied for the lowest round posted by any female player in the field. In its next match, the squad visited the Taconic Golf Club in Williamstown, Mass. for the Williams Invitational Sat and Sun., Sept 22 and 23. There Velardo carded a 75-76-151 total, 12 strokes better than his performance at the same event a year earlier. Velardo tied for 15th among 99 entrants. As a team, Wesleyan placed 16th of 19.
