Jay Johnson, who most recently served
as an assistant men's basketball coach at Harvard University for the
2006-07 campaign, has been named interim head men's basketball coach
at Wesleyan University for the 2007-08 season. He steps in for
11-year veteran head coach Gerry McDowell.
A 2003 graduate Colby College, Jay was a member of the
Mules varsity basketball and baseball teams for four seasons. He
stayed on at his alma mater to serve as an assistant basketball
coach for three seasons. Jay began graduate work at the University
of Southern Maine while serving as an admissions counselor there
during 2003-04, his first year of assistant coaching at Colby.
Johnson becomes just the sixth individual to direct the men's
basketball Cardinals since World War II.
Ryan Wilde -
Assistant Coach
New to the Cardinal staff in
2007-08, Ryan Wilde will be a full-time assistant under Head Coach
Jay Johnson. Graduating from Springfield College in 2005, Ryan
began his collegiate coaching career at Norwich University,
assisting in the basketball program there for two seasons.
During his first season with the Cadets, Norwich won the GNAC title
to qualify for the NCAA tournament. Norwich hosted a
first-round game and won an NCAA tournament game for the first time
in team history. Ryan also has had eight years of experience
coaching at camps and schools beginning with his high-school years
while attending nearby E.O. Smith in Storrs. While at
Springfield, Ryan was a four-year member of the men's basketball
team, serving as a team captain in both 2003-04 and 2004-05.
During his senior year, Springfield reached the second round of the
NCAA Division III tournament.
Jason Abromaitis -
Assistant Coach
A 2007 graduate of Yale University where he was a four-year member
of the Bulldogs men's basketball team, Jason Abromaitis will be
lending a hand in the coaching department under Jay Johnson in
2007-08. Playing in 19 of Yale's 27 games during a 14-13
campaign in 2006-07, Jason averaged 3.1 PPG and 4.1 PPG coming off
the bench. He was the recipient of the Gerald Ford Scholar
Award, the Yale Club of Hartford Shepherd Award for athletic and
academic achievement, and was named academic all-Ivy league as a
senior. Prior to his enrollment at Yale, Jason was a Gatorade
Connecticut Boy's Basketball Player of the Year at Farmington High
School. Jason currently works full-time at BlumShapiro
Consulting in West Hartford.
