Getting out of the blocks in reasonable fashion during the 2005-06 season with a 6-5 record, the men's basketball Cardinals went into a tailspin which resulted in 11 consecutive losses to end the campaign and an uncharacteristic 6-17 mark. Last year's team had no seniors so team co-captains Jimmy Shepherd '07 (#33, left in photo) and Jared Ashe '07 (#11, right in photo) will lead the veteran squad in 2006-07. Shepherd cracked double digits in scoring 15 times last year and finished second on the squad in scoring with 12.6 points a game. His 69 three-pointers last season was the second highest single season figure in team history and set a team record for average three pointers per game with 3.0. Ashe, the point guard, averaged almost 33 minutes a game, 11.4 points, 4.5 assists and 1.9 steals. Up front the team returns Nick Pelletier '08, who led the team in scoring with a 12.7 PPG showing. Also back after a year hiatus is center Robert Kelly '07, who blossomed into a force up front in 2004-05, averaging 16.0 points and a team-high 9.8 rebounds while shooting nearly 50 percent from the field and 78 percent at the line. The team also has five players back who saw more than 10 minutes of action a game on average - forward Sam Grover '08 and guards Mike Raymond '08, Eric Winters '08, Will Griffin '08 and Steve Tolbert '09. Others expected to contribute up front include Gabe Gonzalez-Kreisberg '09 and Sean Collins '08 while Jon Sargent '09 also should see additional time this season. The top newcomer this year is point guard Jeremy Kaminer out of Cherry Hill (N.J.) East High School. He is expected to rack up plenty of minutes in 2006-07. The squad open the year in the UMass Dartmouth Tip-Off Tournament Fri., & Sat., Nov. 17 & 18, taking on Suffolk in the opening round. UMass Dartmouth meets Fitchburg St. in the other first-round contest.
