Trailing by as many as 10 in the second half and by a 58-50 score with 4:38 to play, Wesleyan got nine straight points, all from top scorer Robert Kelly '07 (#50, main photo) to grab a 59-58 lead with 1:47 left of its NESCAC opener with Conn. College Sat., Jan. 13. After Conn. regained the lead on a three-pointer, Jared Ashe '07 (#11, photo insert, lower left) drove for a lay-up with :59.5 on the clock to even the count, 61-61. Conn. missed its next shot and Ashe was fouled grabbing the rebound with :30.4 to go. At the line with the double-bonus, he missed the first but made the second to make it 62-61. Conn. then missed its final shot, a three-point try and when the ball caromed far to the left, all Conn. could do was throw the ball in the direction of the basket but hit the side of the backboard as the horn sounded. Kelly ended the game with 30 points and 10 rebounds for his 18th career double-double and fifth this season. Ashe and Nick Pelletier '08 both chipped in with 13 points. In a non-conference game at Roger Williams Mon., Jan. 15, Wesleyan fell by a 73-62 score. The home team broke a 14-14 tie midway through the first half with 10 straight points during a 3:17 span and led by no less than seven the rest of the way and by as many as 17 in the second half. Speaking of 17, both Kelly and Jimmy Shepherd '07 tallied 17 for the Cardinals with the latter going 4-for-8 from three-point range. The squad has its first back-to-back NESCAC weekend on the road Fri. and Sat., Jan 19 and 20, facing Colby first followed by Bowdoin.
