Playing the final games of the season on the road Fri., Feb. 15 and Sat., Feb. 16, the Cardinals gave one of the top teams in the NESCAC a run for its money but came up four points short in a 75-71 defeat at Middlebury Friday. Both Stan Grayson '09 (#40, main photo by SteveMcLaughlinPhotography, com) and Nick Pelletier '08 (#11, photo insert lower right courtesy of SteveMcLaughlinPhotography, com) picked up a double-double as Grayson netted 20 points along with 12 boards while Pelletier, with his 10th twin-killing of the season, came through with 13 points and 11 caroms. Pelletier upped his career points total to 1,072. He added just four points in the team's season-finale at Williams Sat., an 87-57 loss, to end up in a tie for 11th place on the all-time Wesleyan scoring list with 1,076. The loss at Middlebury had already eliminated Wesleyan from NESCAC playoff contention. Wesleyan hung with the 18-5 Panthers for the opening 10 minutes before the home squad moved out to a 12-point bulge. Still the Cardinals narrowed the gap to just 33-29 at intermission. Again Middlebury pulled ahead by double-digits in the second period only to see Wesleyan whittle the lead to two, 54-52, with 6:13 remaining. The Panthers regained their composure and never lost the lead they had maintained throughout the contest even though the Cardinals shot a blistering 55.2 percent in the second period. At Williams, the Ephs used the final 11 minutes of the first half for a 31-13 run that gave them a 46-24 lead at halftime. It was never close in the second half as the lead was in the 30s throughout. Ezaakk Diggs '09 managed eight points as the team's high scorer as all 16 Cardinals got to play at least five minutes.
