For Third Year in a Row, Cards Return from New Englands with Three Medal-Winning Performances
Competing in the annual New England Rowing Championships on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass. Sat., May 3, Wesleyan returned with three medal-winning efforts as the second varsity eight captured a silver medal while both the varsity eight and third varsity eight came through with bronze-medal rows. The varsity eight couldn't get past Trinity and Williams, the two crews who defeated them during the dual-race season. The Cardinals crept up on the Ephs, however, as Wesleyan finished behind Williams in both the heat race and the grand final but by narrow margins of just 1.4 and 0.6 seconds. Trinity won the grand final by 5.5 seconds over Williams. The second varsity eight won its heat by more than three seconds over Coast Guard and placed second behind Trinity in the grand final by 5.2 seconds. For the third varsity, it was much the same as the first varsity, with Trinity and Williams taking the top two spots and Wesleyan just a fraction of a second (0.5 to be exact) behind the Ephs. Last year Wesleyan was the silver-medal winner in all three races while in 2006, Wesleyan was third in the second varsity affair, and second in both the third varsity and novice four races. The team will close out its spring campaign with another trip to Worcester Sat.-Sun., May 10-11 for the ECAC Collegiate Championships.
