Cardinals Season Comes to a Close at Top-Seeded Colby in NESCAC Tournament, 4-1

Taking on top-seeded Colby in the first round of the NESCAC tournament Sat., March 1 in Waterville, Me., Wesleyan saw its season come to an end on the down side of a 4-1 count. It was the second time in two weeks that the Mules picked up a victory over the Cardinals, having come back from a 2-0 deficit in Middletown Feb. 16 to claim a 3-2 overtime win. This time Coby scored twice in the first period to carry a 2-0 lead into the middle stanza. When the Mules struck for a pair of goal just 19 second apart in the opening two minutes of period two, Wesleyan found itself in a 4-0 hole. The Cardinals got on the board midway through the period when Scott Burns '09 (#9, photo insert upper left, left side) lit the lamp but it proved to be the final goal of the season for Wesleyan. It gave Burns his 14th point of the season, tying him for second with David Layne '10 (#12, photo insert upper left, right side), who had an assist on the tally. Layne had twice the number of goals this season as the second-ranked Cardinal with his 10 goals. Also assisting on the final goal was Sam Robinson '10 (#24, main photo), who led the team in assists this year with 16 and points with 19. Goalie Mike Palladino '09 came up with 28 stops as he concluded the season with a .900 save percentage and 3.37 goals-against average.
