WESLEYAN CAPTURES 2009 NESCAC TITLE

Downing Little Three rival Williams in a first-round NESCAC tournament game at home Sunday, April 26, 11-5, Wesleyan got off to a solid start in its quest for the 2009 NESCAC men's lacrosse championship.  The next obstacle was tournament host Middlebury in a semi-final Saturday, May 2.  Down 8-3 at halftime, the Cardinals roared back behind five goals from top scorer Russ Follansbee to tie the game, 9-9, and stay with the Panthers down to the wire.  When Adam Kirk '09 tied the game for the fifth time in the second half at 14-14 with 15 seconds to play, the teams were destined for overtime.  Dan Latzman '09 wasted little time propelling the Cardinals into the title game with the game-winner just 36 seconds into the extra frame.  That put Wesleyan against Tufts and with steady play at both end of the field, the Cardinals prevailed, 14-10.  Follansbee finished the tournament with 16 points on 10 goals and six assists, just two points shy of the tournament record set by Wesleyan all-time great Glenn Adams '06. He also was just one goal shy of the tourney mark.  For a video highlight clip and head coach John Raba's comments about his team's achievement, please click on the following link --  Cardinals Win NESCAC Title
