AMOS MAGEE '93, AS HEAD COACH, AND JARED ASHE '07, AS
PLAYER, HELP UNITED STATES TO GOLD MEDAL IN PAN AM MACCABI GAMES IN BUENOS
AIRES, ARGENTINA
Jared Ashe '07 (photo insert upper right, courtesy of Peter Stein '84), who
earned National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III
All-America honors as a senior and helped the Wesleyan University men's soccer
team make two appearances in the NCAA Division III tournament (2005 and 2006),
was a stalwart defender for the United States entry in the Pan American Maccabi
Games held in Buenos Aires, Argentina. There the United States captured a
gold medal with a 2-0 victory over Argentina in the championship game. The
US had defeated Colombia and Chile while losing to Argentina in stage play,
knocked off Mexico, 3-2 on penalty kicks, in a semi-final, then avenged its
earlier loss with a title-clinching shutout of the host.
The Pan Am Maccabi Games are one of two international
events for Jewish athletes held every four years.
Head coach of the United States squad was Amos Magee
'93 (main photo), Wesleyan's all-time leading scorer with 35 goals and 16
assists over his four years and an NSCAA All-American as well. He is the
coach of the A-League Minnesota Thunder, a team for which he has played in the
past. Magee also has had some playing action in the MSL with the Tampa Bay
Mutiny to his credit. Over nine playing seasons with the Thunder, Magee
accumulated 64 goals and 39 assists and stands as the team's all-time top
scorer.
