Cards Tie Team Record for Consecutive Victories After 3-1 Success at Western Connecticut
With Austin Woolridge '11 (#18, main photo by Steve McLaughlinPhotography.com) breaking a 1-1 tie in the 77th minute, Wesleyan went on to defeat Western Connecticut on the road, 3-1, Wed., Oct. 17 for its eighth straight victory. That tied the team mark for consecutive victories set by the 1962 squad and equaled by the 1991 Cardinals. Matt Nevin '09 (#14, photo insert lower left by Peter Stein '84) drew Wesleyan even in the 21st minute as he one-timed a pass from Nick Whipple '10. Woolridge's game-winner was a leaping, acrobatic tally off a header by Geoff Zartarian '11. The Cardinals added a third goal as a corner kick by Justin Mello '08 was directed into the Western net by a Colonial defender. Wesleyan had fallen behind in the second minute when a cross by Western was misplayed by the Cardinal defense into its own net. It ended Wesleyan's streak of scorless minutes at 476:46 over a seven-game span. Otherwise, keeper Matt Gnall '08 excelled in net with nine stops on the evening. Wesleyan will have its stiffest test of the season when it takes its win streak up to Amherst Sat., Oct. 20 to face the undefeated Lord Jeffs, ranked second nationally in Division III.
