Cards Fall in Season Opener as WNEC Pulls Away in Second Half for Victory in Middletown
Nigel Stacey '11 (#29, photo) made his Wesleyan varsity debut in the team's season opener vs. Western New England Tues., Sept. 9. He had a shutout going through the first half and finished the game with five saves, but WNEC broke the tie in the 48th minute, added an insurance tally in the 76th minute and scored again with just 10 seconds left for a 3-0 win. It was WNEC's initial victory over Wesleyan as this was the third straight year the teams have met with the Cardinal prevailing in both 2006 and 2007. Wesleyan will look to regroup quickly as Bowdoin comes to town for the NESCAC opener Sat., Sept. 13. The game is scheduled for a webcast with details for watching on the athletics home page under "webcasts." Wesleyan and Bowdoin met twice last year with Wesleyan winning in Brunswick, Me., before Bowdoin came to Middletown to take the first-round NESCAC tournament game the following day.
