With 17 letterwinners back from the 2008 squad, Wesleyan men's soccer is in the hands (or perhaps, feet) of veterans. Ten of the experienced Cardinals started at least seven games a year ago as the team will look to get out of the gate quickly. Wesleyan opens the 2009 campaign with a difficult assignment, taking on Little Three rival Williams on the road Sat., Sept. 12.
Back to lead the squad are tri-captains Jory Kahan '10 (#6, photo insert upper right), Mark Murphy '10 (#17, left side of photo) and Nick Whipple '10 (#11, photo insert lower right). Whipple has been a mainstay in the midfield for three seasons while Kahan has been a rock on defense. Murphy has been a spark plug on attack. Other top returning players include Geoff Zartarian '11 and Keisuke Yamashita '10, both of whom netted four goals a year ago, Asante Brooks '10, Woody Redpath '10, Harry Lewin '12, Tim Dodds '11, Jacob Mergendoller '11 and goalie Nigel Stacey '11. Austin Woolridge '11, Will Mithoefer '11, Zach Dixon '11, Ben Johnson '11, Jacob Levkowicz '12 and Nick Boskovich '10 also return having earned a letter in 2008. The Cardinals also have a bevy of newcomers to add talent and depth to the program. Eleven freshman are listed on the preseason roster, all looking to contribute to the team's fortune.
