Sam Grover '08 Breaks His Own Triple Jump Mark While Capturing a New England Div. III Title
Breaking his own team record in the triple jump by almost a foot with a leap of 48-4 1/2, Sam Grover '08 (photo) won the New England Division III title at Springfield Sat., May 5 and ended up qualifying for a second career trip to the NCAA Division III Track Championships. He qualified for Nationals in 2005 when he set the previous record of 47-6 1/4 while winning a New England Open title. While his jump was just 2 1/4 inch shy of automatic qualification for the NCAAs, Grover was one of 17 entrants in the triple jump at the NCAA Division III meet at Wisconsin-Oshkosh May 24-26. There his best effort was a 46-3 1/4, which failed to advance him to the final round. His New England Open leap was third-best in the country heading into the NCAA Championships. Grover was one of three Cardinals to place at the N.E. Div. III meet. Finishing fourth in the javelin was Mike Moody '10 (174-6) while Nate Huddell '07 grabbed eighth place in the 3,000m steeple chase (9:45.63). May 10-12, a contingent of runners headed to Dartmouth for the New England Open meet but no Cardinal placed. Alex Battaglino's '07 13th-place finish in the 10k was the top finish for Wesleyan.
