Tommie Lark '11 Eclipses Triple Jump Mark Two Weeks in a Row, Also Wins Long Jump

Wesleyan Track at the Wesleyan Invitational II

Tommie Lark '11 (photo insert lower right) was a two-event winner for the Cardinals during the Wesleyan Invitational II Sat., Jan. 17 as his winning jump in the triple jump (46-11 1/4) set a team mark while he also captured the long jump (22-4 1/2). 

Then a week later during the Cardinals Invitational I at Wesleyan Sat., Jan. 24, he broke his own record with a second-place showing of 47-1 3/4. The winning effort of 47-10 by a Conn. College athlete is the best in the country for Division III thus far this year. Lark is a foot over the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA Championships and several inches ahead of the final qualifier for the 2008 NCAA meet. His winning long jump Jan. 24 was 22-5 3/4, a personal best for him at Wesleyan and just 4 1/4 inches shy of the NCAA provisional standard.

Wesleyan dominated the mile run on Jan. 17 as Cardinals took four of the top five spots led by Justin Spring '10 (second from left, main photo) who bolted past teammate Matt Katz '11 (far left in photo) in the last 100 meters to win the event in a time of 4:33.21, just half a second ahead of Katz. Jonah Blumstein '09 (second from right in photo) was fourth in 4:35.07 and Charles Lang '11 (far right in photo) fifth in 4:35.47. Spring went on to place second in the 3k event, followed by Blumstein in third on Jan. 24. Chris Foster '09 continued the team's fine efforts in the mile Jan. 24, placing second of 36 runners in a time of 4:26.98.

Two other Cardinals were near winners in their respective events Jan. 17 as Brad Litchfield '09 was second of 13 in the 1000m as his time of 2:38.41 was only 0.13 seconds off the winning time. Chris Coleman '10 was a scant 0.44 seconds off the winning pace in the 800m run with his 2:01.05 clocking.

In the throws, Newman Hoffman '09 has a toss of 43-8 1/2 in the shot put for runner-up status among 12 entrants Jan. 17 while Mike Moody '10 heaved the 35-pound weight 41-8 3/4 to earn second place among 22 competitors Jan. 24.

Wesleyan traveled to Tufts for its Invitational Sat., Jan. 31. Placing sixth of 11 teams with 53 points, Wesleyan got a second-place finish from its 4x200m relay squad of Jadeene Gabay '10, Alex Iwamoto '12, Kevin Walters '12 and Lark. The 4x400m relay of Litchfield, Coleman, Scott Cole '09 and Avinash Sridhar '10 took third. Top individual finishes came from Blumstein in the 5k (3rd, 15:20.58), Litchfield in the 800m (4th, 1:59.12) and Foster in the 1000m (4th, 2:35.90). Lark did not jump during this event.

Wesleyan will host its fourth and final invitational of the season Saty., Feb. 7, the Cardinal Invitational II.
