Erin Gold '11 (#25), a native of New Hope, Pa., and a government major at Wesleyan, was an essential starter last season as a punishing penetrator and physical defender. Allie Southam '11 (#33), a native of Santa Monica, Calif., who is majoring in neuroscience and behavior, missed the past two seasons due to injury. After another year of successful rehabilitation, Southam is excited to contribute her intensity, court vision and leadership as a senior. McKinley Tennant '11 (#10), a native of Swampscott, Mass., and a government and international relations major, continued her point-guard duties last year and demonstrated her leadership and confidence as Wesleyan’s floor leader.
Head Coach Kate Mullen expects this senior trio of captains for 2010-11 to bring talent, a competitive mindset and love for the game that will provide the foundation for Wesleyan’s success in their final season. These three served as team tri-captains during 2009-10 as well.
Wesleyan, which fielded a women’s basketball team devoid of seniors during its 8-15, 2009-10 campaign, faced one of the most difficult schedules in the country. Of the Cardinals’ 15 defeats, 11 came against a group of eight teams that qualified for the NCAA Division III tournament. Seven of those eight squads advanced past the first round of the NCAAs. The Cardinals will have another competitve season ahead in 2010-11, which begins in a tournament at Endicott vs. Newbury Fri., Nov. 19. The home opener features Western New England Tues, Nov. 30.
Returning virtually intact from a year ago, the 2010-11 Cardinals will welcome a crew of six newcomers, mostly guards, to add tremendous depth and shooting talent to the squad. Eileen Gaffney '12 led the team in both scoring (12/5 PPG) and rebounding (7.7 RPG) a year ago with Sam LaCroce (11.3 PPG, 6.2 RPG) second in both categories.
