Women's Tennis Runs Record to 4-0 after 7-2 Home Victory over RWU - Williams Hands Cards First Loss
Led by the undefeated mark of #4 singles player Nicki Softness '14 (main photo), the women's tennis squad has posted its second straight 4-0 record to begin a season. The Cardinals latest victim was Roger Williams Sun., Sept. 26, as Wesleyan swept the doubles matches and took four of six singles affairs for a 7-2 win. Softness, who has played singles and doubles in each match thus far and is 4-0 in both venues, has been the steadiest Cardinal in the early going. She has yet to lose a set, playing three times at #4 and once at #5. She also has been playing #1 doubles of late with Genevieve Aniello '13 and is 2-0 at that position. She has a pair of triumphs at #3 doubles as well.
Also undefeated is Grace Smith '14 (photo insert lower right) although she has played just three singles matches, twice at #2 and once at #3. She has partnered with Linda McDougal '11 (photo insert upper right) for four wins at #2 doubles. McDougal is 3-1 in singles this year, mainly at #3. Softness, Smith and McDougal were part of five team points for the Cardinals against Roger Williams. The other points came from #5 singles Liza Fletcher '14 and the doubles team of Taylor Morales '13 and Ana Alvarado '12 at #3.
Wesleyan had one match remaining on its fall schedule and that came up Sat., Oct. 9 at home against NESCAC powerhouse Williams, a team Wesleyan has never defeated in 36 all-time meetings. Williams made short work of the Cardinals with its 37th straight victory, a 9-0 decision. No Cardinal individual or doubles tandem took more than two games from their Eph adversary.
Wesleyan will resume its match activity during its southern training trip to the Orlando, Fla. area during March break, 2011.
