Leading the Cardinals in goals during the 2010 campaign with four, three of which provided Wesleyan with its margin of victory, Walter Rodriguez "13 (#10, photo by Peter Stein '84) earned second-team all-NESCAC honors following the vote of the conference coaches. While Rodriguez scored the season's most important goal, that in the 95th minute of a first-round NESCAC tournament game at Williams to give the Cardinals a 2-1 triumph, he also put home the winner in a 2-1 victory at Springfield and the lone goal in a 1-0 conquering of Coast Guard. His other goal in 2010 was not shabby either as it provided Wesleyan with a 2-1 lead over Conn. College in a game eventually won by the Cardinals, 3-2 in double-overtime. That win propelled the squad into the post-season. A loss or a tie would have ended the team's season Oct. 29.
Rodriguez started seven of the squad's 16 games this year, including the final three. Regarded as the team's most nimble ball-handler, Rodriguez uses his 5-3 frame to his advantage with quick steps and sharp moves. A year ago, Rodriguez played in all 19 games for Wesleyan during an outstanding 12-2-5 season that saw the team reach the NCAA Division III Tournament Sweet 16. He netted a pair of goals and had an assist for five points, as his career point total stands at 13.
Wesleyan went 8-8 overall in 2010 while reaching the NESCAC semi-finals for a third straight season and for the fifth time in the last eight years. Of the team's 16 contests, 15 were decided by one goal, three of them in overtime.
In addition team captains for the 2011 season have been announced. Leading the team next fall will be Zach Dixon '12, who picked up two goals and an assist from his starting spot in the midfield in 2010, and three-year starting defender Harrison Lewin '12.
