Cardinals Now Stand 3-2 on the Year after Trip to Boston and First Day of Wesleyan Round Robin

Sweeping past #30 Northeastern in the season opener Sat., Nov. 20, the Cardinals featured a lineup chock full of youngsters as freshmen occupied four of the starting spots wth three sophmores, a junior and a senior rounding out the ladder.  Eight of the Cardinals won their match without dropping a game en route to the 9-0 victory.

The table was turned as the then #17-ranked Cardinals took on #12 Bates in the day's second match and the Bobcats cashed in for a 9-0 win.  Three Cardinals stretched their Bates rival to four games, including #2 Diana Edwards '14 (photo), #6 Jenny Chu '11 and #7 Ellen Schwed.  Tanesha Jackson '13, playing #4, was on her way to a likely victory with a 2-0 lead in games before an injury forced her to retire.

The Cardinals closed out the weekend in the Boston area Sun., Nov. 21, facing #27 Wellesley in a match played at M.I.T.  Again, Wesleyan cruised to victory, this time behind nine 3-0 decisions.  Mary Foster '14, the Cardinals' new #1, yielded just 14 points to her Wellesley opponent.  Chu was the most dominant on the day as she gave up a scant three points whiile playing #5.

The team, now ranked #16, resumed play Fri., Dec. 3 on the first day of the three-day Wesleyan Round Robin.  Slated for Friday was a match with #23 Tufts, followed by #11 Middlebury.  Wesleyan made short work of the Jumbos with a 9-0 sweep as six matches went Wesleyan's way, 3-0, including Edwards at #2.  Foster, Grace Zimmerman '13 (#3) and Jackson took decisive fifth games with three of the games for Jackson going extra points, including the final game, 16-14. While Wesleyan had turned the tide on Tufts last year, 7-2, ending an eight-match skid vs. the Jumbos, never before in the 38-match history of the series had Wesleyan planted a 9-0 shellacking on Tufts.

Middlebury secured a 9-0 victory over Wesleyan with only Edwards, Jackson and Danielle Craig '13 (#5) pressing their matches to four games.
