Men's Squash Opens Wes Round Robin with 2-0 Mark Including 9-0 Win over Tufts
The Cardinals' fabulous frosh passed their first stiff test with flying colors Fri., Dec. 3, to inaugurate the Wesleyan Round Robin. Defeating NESCAC rival Tufts, 9-0, the Cards not only ended an eight-match losing streak vs. the Jumbos dating back to 2004, they completely reversed the fortunes of matches with Tufts as the last seven decisions went the way of the Jumbos by no less than an 8-1 count.
With six newcomers in the lineup, the Cardinals captured six matches by 3-0 counts as #9 Chase Hochman '14 (right side photo) produced the most decisive win, yielding a mere 13 points to his opponent. Dale Kobrin '11 (#3), Jeff Berman '14 (#4), Alex Nunez '14 (#6), Ethan Moritz '14 (#7) and Lucas Wherry '13 (#8) all swept their Jumbo rivals. In the night's most dramatic match, #1 John Steele '14 (left side photo) kept his record unblemished on the year by recovering from a 2-0 deficit to capture his match, 3-2, 11-8 in the final game.
Wesleyan entered the match ranked #29 nationally while Tufts held the #22 slot. Wesleyan then made short work of Colgate in its second match of the night, also winning 9-0, with all matches going the Cardinals' way, 3-0. Colgate was ranked #32.
Wesleyan has a great opportunity to shake up the national poll even more Sat., Dec. 4 with two more matches in the Wesleyan Round Robin. The Cardinals take on #23 Colby followed by #19 George Washington, before finishing up the weekend against #26 Goergetown Sun., Dec.5.
