Joey Schwartz '14, NEWA Rookie of the Week, is 125-Pound Champ, Most Outstanding Wrestler at R.I.T. Invite as Cards Finish 2nd of 9
Led by the 4-0 record of 125-pounder Joey Schwartz '14 (photo courtesy of Julie Sampson P'14), who also earned Most Outstanding Wrestler honors during the tournament and was named NEWA Rookie of the Week for the second time this season, Wesleyan collected 103 points to place second of nine teams during the annual R.I.T. Invitational Sat., Dec. 4. Schwartz was one of two Cardinal champions as Jefferson Ajayi '13 also went 4-0 to capture first pace at 184 pounds. Both Ajayi and Schwartz were seeded third in their weight class. Schwartz defeated the top seed from Cortland St., a team ranked 20th nationally, in the finals, 5-3, while Ajayi conquered the #4 seed in the title bout, 3-2.
In total, 13 of the 20 Cardinals entered in the tournament placed among the top six in their weight class. Nine of the 13 were either freshmen or sophomores. Other featured finishers were third-placers Nick Scotto '13 at 141 pounds, Kyle Roosa '13 at 174 pounds and Luke Erickson '12 at 197 pounds. Capturing fourth was Maika Nagata '13 at 133, Howard Tobochnik '13 at 149, and Troy Sampson '14 at 157. In fifth place was Chris Alvanos '11 at 125, Greg Faxon '14 at 141 and Dave Amrhein '12 at 197. Sixth-place postings came from Gideon Levy '13 at 174 and Dan Conroy '11 at heavyweight.
