Cards Captured Two Matches during Vassar Team Challenge but Columbia Claims Overall Title

Running his team-leading record to 17-5 at #1, John Steele '14 (photo) took a pair of 3-0 decisions over Columbia and host Vassar during the Vassar Team Challenge Sat., Feb. 12.  With overall points collected by both the men's and women's team during the three-way competition, Wesleyan picked up 14 points via the men with a 5-4 win over Columbia and a 9-0 sweep of Vassar.  The women split their matches, defeating Vassar, 7-2, and dropping a match to Columbia by the same count.  Columbia claimed the Challenge trophy with 28 points to Wesleyan's 23.  Vassar had just three points.

In avenging an earlier setback to #20 Columbia, Wesleyan, ranked #22, did its damage in the top two-third of the lineup as five of the top six slots went the Cardinals' way by 3-0 scores.  Winners were Steele, #2 Matt Candal '11, #4 Alex Nunez '14, #5 Zander Nassikas '14 and #6 Jeff Berman '14.

With just three matches remaining this season coming up during the National Team Tournament to be hosted by Harvard Fri.-Sun., Feb. 25-27, Wesleyan will be setting its sights on its first winning record on 10 years.  At 13-10, the Cardinals need just one victory at Nationals to secure a winning ledger.
