With seniors Alex Bean '11, Leah Coe '11, Molly Friedemann '11, Julia Heffelfinger '11, Sena Ito '11 and Emma Ram '11 (bottom photo by Ben Cohen '10) suiting up in the red & black on the home ice for the final time, Wesleyan challenged its NESCAC rival from Waterville, Me., Colby, Sat., Feb. 12. Goalie Ashleigh Corvi '13 (#35, photo upper right) delivered her eight consecutive game with 30 or more saves by stopping 31 Mule scoring bids, but as has been the case of late, penatlies haunted the Cardinals as three power-play goals by the visitors were integral in Colby's 5-1 victory.
Wesleyan drew first blood as a good individual move by Ito (#12, photo upper left) around the Colby defense spotted Wesleyan a 1-0 lead 6:01 into the opening frame. It was her second marker of the season. Two power-play talies in a span of 1:20 gave Colby the lead for good with 7:41 left in the first frame. A pair of goals in the second stanza were complememnted by a third power-play goal at 7:25 of the third period to round out the scoring.
Colby generated a 36-16 edge in shots en route to a sweep of the season series. Last year, Wesleyan featured its first-ever sweep of Colby, winning 2-1 and 3-2, while snapping a nine-game skid vs. the Mules.
Next up for the squad is an historic contest vs. Trinity at Rentschler Field in East Hartford as part of HockeyFest Hartford. The game will be held in the outdoor venue Tues., Feb. 15.
