Libby Lazare '14 Leads Distance Contingent in 5k at Tufts Invite with Second-Place Run

Four Cardinal runners place among the top six during the 5k race during the Tufts Invitational Sat., Feb. 5, led by Libby Lazare '14 (photo), who placed second in a time of 18:37.73.  She was the top collegiate finisher in the race as 16 runners entered the event.  Three other Cardinals - Julia Mark '13, Liz Wheatley '09 and Hannah Zimmerman '13 - also had strong races, placing third, fifth and sixth, respectively, all within 15 seconds of Lazare.

In total, Wesleyan poisted 11 top-eight finishes during the meet.  Sierra Livious '14 was in on two of them as she finished fourth in the shot put (37-0 1/4) and ewas part of a fifth-place 4x200m relay along with Isabel Stern '14, Lia Monti '13 and Julia Frieze '12.  Stern and Monti both had an individual top-eight as Stern was fifth in the 55m hurdles and Monti grabbed eighth in the 400m.  Rounding out the Cardinals' placings were Ceili Brennan in the 800m (7th), Jessica Levin '11 in the mile (6th) and Kathryn Kulowski '11 in the long jump.

The next acton for the squad came up Sat., Feb. 12 at home when Wesleyan serves as host of the Collegiate Track Championships.  Wesleyan competed unofficially in the meet as an unscored entry.  A few of the Cardinals' top efforts came from Julie Platt '12, who would have been second in the 3k (11:02.59); Chloe Lalonde '13, who would have been fourth in the 1000m (3:16.13); and the distance medley relay of Jess Levin '11, Ceili Brennan '13, Nicole Lepre '13 and Julia Mark '13, which finished ahead of the pack (12:54.55) by more than six seconds.

Ahead for the squad is the annual New England Division III Championships Fri. and Sat., Feb. 18-19, this year hosted by MIT.  Qualifying Cardinals will be vying for top-eight finishes, good for all-New England recognition.
