The Cardinals wrapped up the Howe Cup competition and their match-play season Sun., Feb. 20 against Bowdoin, a team Wesleyan knocked off, 7-2, during the NESCAC tournament. Wesleyan hoped to repeat that result to finish on its seed at the Howe Cup and clinch a winning season as the team stood 13-12. Last year, the squad posted a 15-14 mark, its first winning campaign since the 1998-99 season.
Wesleyan came through with the victory in the season finale vs. Bowdoin, but by a tense 5-4 score. Thus the team went 14-12 on the year. Three Cardinals ended the Howe Cup with 3-0 marks as #2 Diana Edwards '14 (left side photo) defeated her Polar Bear opponent, 3-1, and #5 Danielle Craig '13, swept throught with a 3-0 win. At #4 Tanesha Jackson '13 (right side photo) came up with a dramatic 3-2 triumph, taking the fifth game, 12-10. Also winning for Wesleyan vs. Bowdoin were #7 Jenny Chu '11 (3-0) in her final collegiate match and #9 Meherazade Sumariwalla '12 (3-1).
Facing Hamilton on the second day of the Howe Cup Sat., Feb. 19, the Cardinals fell to the Continentals for the second time in two weeks, this time by a narrow 6-3 count. When the teams met during the NESCAC tournament at Trinity Feb. 5, Hamilton prevailed, 7-2.
In the Howe Cup, Wesleyan was seeded third in "C" Division (Walker Cup) and 19th overall and with its 2-1 mark, equalled its seed. Among Wesleyan three victors vs. Hamilton, Edwards and Jackson downed their Continental foe in three straight games. Winning in a full five games was Craig. Four other Cardinals took at least one game during their match in the competitive encounter.
For the year, two Cardinals posted 16 individual wins as the team leaders - Craig (16-10) and Sumariwalla (16-9). Edwards, Jackson, Chu and Tan all logged 15 victories, exceeding the team's total.
