Cardinals Rolls Past WCSU, 9-0, Surrounded by NESCAC Losses to Amherst, Bowdoin and Colby

Facing Western Conn. at home indoors Tues., March 29, the Cardinals had little trouble defeating its visitor by a 9-0 count, winning each of the singles matches in straight sets and two double matches by an 8-3 score.  The tightest match proved to be first doubles as Jeff Legunn '13 and Michael Piderit '12 came back from a 6-5 deficit to grab a 9-7 victory.  Legunn had no problem at #1 singles, winning 6-0, 6-1.  Legunn was one of three Cardinals to win in both singles and doubles, joined by #2 Alex Hirsch '13, who paired with #4 Donald Kleckner '13 for a second-doubles triumph.  Hirsch won his singles match, 6-4, 6-2, while Kleckner was quite convincing with a 6-1, 6-1 win.  Brian McDermott '12 secured a 7-5, 6-3 win at #3 while Michael Glen '13 won at #5, 6-1, 6-0.  Team co-captain Steve Hauser '11 (photo left side) rounded out the singles wins with a 6-3, 6-1 conquering at #6.  Team co-captain Garrett Blank '11 (photo right side) and Robert Troyer '12 were the winners at #3 doubles.

Opening the northern slate by taking on arch-rival and second-ranked nationally Amherst at home Sat., March 26, also indoors due to cold temperatures and wind, the Cardinals dropped a 7-2 decision.  Amherst attended with only a portion of its squad as the Lord Jeffs also had a match vs. MIT scheduled for the same time. Amherst also won that match, 9-0.

Victorious for Wesleyan with three-set wins, both in a super-tie-breaker, were #1 Legunn and Kleckner, playing #5.  The match was the first of seven NESCAC encounters for the Cardinals this spring with the next scheduled on the road Sat., April 2 at Bowdoin. The Polar Bears, ranked #14 nationally, disposed of the Cardinals, 9-0, with each of the first four singles matches going to the home squad in straight sets.  The #5 and #6 singles matches were reduced to pro-sets along the lines of doubles matches.

Next for the Cardinals was a NESCAC home match with Colby Sat., April 9.  Lone Cardinal winners were Legunn and Piderit as the Mules captured a 7-2 decision.

Wesleyan travels to Babson Thurs., April 14 for its upcoming match.
