Sam Epstein '12 & Allee Beatty '13 Combine for 12 Hits, 6 Runs and 7 RBIs during Split on March 14 in Florida

On the fifth day of play for the Cardinals in Clermont, Fla., Wesleyan scored eight runs in the 1st inning, then held off Westfield St. to secure an 11-7 victory before falling to Bethel, 11-9, Mon., March 14.  The squad has a day off before resuming play Wed., March 16, taking on Bethany and New England College.

Sam Epstein '12 (#11, main photo) and Allee Beatty '13 (#22, photo insert upper left) combined for 12 hits in 16 at-bats (.750 average), scoring six and driving in seven of the Cardinals' 20 runs on the day.  Epstein had the big clout of the 1st inning vs. Westfield with a three-run homer.  That followed a two-run double by Dana Levy '12.  Epstein added an RBI double as well in the 6th and then scored the team's final run to pad the margin to four runs.  Beatty went 3-for-4 with three runs in the game.  Caitlyn Grudzinski '13 picked up the win in relief as she tossed four solid innings, allowing just one earned run.  Laura Getchell '14 hurled the final inning, getting Westfield out one-two-three with a pair of strikeouts.

Against Bethel, the lead changed hands or was tied five times as Wesleyan led 3-0 in the 1st and 5-2 after three innings.  Bethel took the lead in the 4th, 6-5, but the Cardinals tied the game in the 5th, only to fall behind, 7-6, in the bottom of the 5th.  Wesleyan regained the edge in the top of the 6th, 8-7, as Chrissy Bello '12 smacked a two-run single.  A four-run outburst by Bethel put the lead back in its corner, 11-8, in the bottom of the 6th.  Wesleyan got a run back in the 7th on Beatty's RBI single and had the tying runs on base, but Bethel induced the game-ending fly ball to wrap up the win.

Through nine games (4-5 record), Talia Bernstein '11 leads the squad with a .484 batting average, followed closely by Beatty (.483).  Also well above the .400 mark is Bello (.448) as she and Epstein pace the Cardinals with 11 RBI apiece.
