John Parsons '13 and Michael Glen '13 are Keys to Cardinals First NESCAC Win of Season, Followed by Tight Loss to Tufts
Facing Conn. College at home Thurs., April 21 in the sixth of the squad's seven slated NESCAC matches, Wesleyan overcame a 2-1 deficit after completing the doubles affairs, and captured a 5-4 decision with wins in four singles matches. Wesleyan completed is NESCAC play for the year when it hosted Tufts Sat., April 23. The result was Wesleyan's third straight 5-4 NESCAC result with the Jumbos pulling out the win.
John Parsons '13 (photo insert lower middle) and Michael Glen '13 (photo insert upper right) were the keys to the Cardinals' victory as they won their singles matches in straight sets at #4 and #6, respectively, while teaming at #3 doubles for a 9-7 triumph. Also winning in straight sets to help provide Wesleyan with its margin of victory was #1 Jeff Legunn '13 (main photo) and #5 Donald Kleckner '13 (photo insert lower right).
The match with Tufts came down to a pair of three-set decisions at #5 and #6 as Tufts led, 4-3, after the first seven matches were complete. Glen came up just short in his bid, losing 6-3 in the final set, while Kleckner, despite fighting a leg cramp, came through with a 6-4 final-set victory to secure his match. That went along with his 8-4 victory at #2 doubles, paired with Legunn, who cruised to his #1 singles win, 6-0, 6-2. The triumph improved Legunn's singles mark this season to an impressive 14-3. Glen and Parsons provided Wesleyan's other team point with an 8-5 win at #3 doubles.
The Cardinals close out the year by hosting Coast Guard Wed., April 27. A victory by the Cardinals would evened the team's record for a .500 season.
