Austin Cotant '13 Wins 800m, Sam Roth '13 Captures 1500m For Men's Track During Swanson Invitational

Hosting the annual Elmer Swanson Invitational Sat., April 9, named for long-time track and cross-country coach Elmer Swanson, Wesleyan came through with 12 top-five finishes over the 19 events with 11 teams in attendance.  Included among the performances were a pair of first-place finishes turned in by Austin Cotant '13 (photo insert upper left) in the 800m race and Sam Roth '13 (photo insert lower left) in the 1500m race.  Cotant's time was 1:59.39, while right behind in second place was teammate Matt Katz '11 (1:59.63).  Roth was part of a Cardinal top-three sweep with his 4:07.37 clocking.  Seth Hafferkamp '12 was a mere .37 seconds behind.  Zak Malik '14 was third in 4:10.36.

Ernest Wingate '14 (main photo) snagged second place in the 100m hurdles and followed it up with a third-place effort in the 400m hurdles while also contributing the the team's 4x400m relay that came in second.  Rounding out the team's top-five placetaking was Alex Iwamoto '12, who took second in the triple jump ; Julian Applebaum '13, who placed second in the 3k ; Tommie Lark '12, who was fourth in the long jump ; and Jack Pacelle '13, who was fifth in the 400m.  Both Pacelle and Lark were on the 4x400m relay, completed by Paulie Lowther '13.

The next week, Wesleyan competed in the Solomon Invitational, hosted by Northeastern Sat., April 16.  The Cardinals took part along with a plethora of college and club teams along with a number of unattached entrants. The Cardinals' top finish on the day came from the 4x800m relay team of Cotant, Hafferkamp, Katz and Roth, which placed first with a time of 8:05.42, edging out the second-place squad by .29 seconds. Second-place finishes came from Lark in the triple jump (46-2) and Wingate in the 110m hurdles (:15.70). Wesleyan also got strong efforts from Iwamoto in the long jump (4th, 20-9), Roth in the 800m run (5th, 1:58.96) as well as Katz (3rd, 4:03.80) and Cotant (5th, 4:05.92) in the 1500m. In addition, Pacelle had a pair of top-eight finishes in the 200m (8th, :23.30) and 400m (5th, :51.55).

Ahead for the Cardinals the annual Little Three meet, this year hosted by Amherst Sat., April 23.
