Wesleyan began the defense of its 2010 NESCAC tournament title by hosting NESCAC West rival Middlebury in a double-header Sat, April 2. Pitcher Dana Levy '12 (#10, photo) worked out of several jams in the opener while holding the Panthers to five hits as she stranded 10 Middlebury runners. As a result, Middlebury scored just two runs, one of which was unearned due to a passed ball, but it proved to be the difference in the game as Wesleyan pushed across only one run from its eight hits, dropping the 2-1 decision. Middlebury had an easier time in the second game, rolling away behind a four-run 1st inning and capturing a 8-0 win in five innings. The two Middlebury wins kept the streak between the teams intact as all 12 double-headers played between the squads has produced a two-game sweep. Since the NESCAC schedule expanded to a three-game series among conference rivals four years ago, Wesleyan has gone 10-2 vs. Middlebury and has never suffered a series sweep. The teams complete their season series with a single game Sun., April 3.
Chrissy Bello '12 and Alexis Kral '12 combined for half the Wesleyan's hits in the first game as each had two safeties. Still, Wesleyan left runners on base in five of seven innings, four times in scoring position. Wesleyan was limited to four hits in the second game while the Panthers racked up 13.
