Nearly Intact Wesleyan Women's Tennis Ready to Embark on 2011 Fall Season

Losing just one competitor to graduation, #5 player Linda McDougal '11, the Cardinals return virtually intact from the 2010-11 season as they prepare for the upcoming 2011 fall season.  The squad has six dual matches slated along with the annual ITA Tournament, this year hosted by Bates.  The opening match is on the road Sat., Sept. 10 against Simmons.  Wesleyan inaugurates the home schedule Sun., Sept. 11 vs. Nichols.  At that time, Wesleyan's newly resurfaced courts, which feature the US Open courts color and surface, will make their competitive debut.

Wesleyan will be a little depleted during the fall as veteran #1 Genevieve Aniello '13 is studying abroad but will be back for the more intensive spring season.  That likely moves team co-captain and last year's #2 standout Sarah Miller '12 (left side photo) into the top slot.  She posted a 7-4 singles mark last year after returning from a semester abroad herself.  Grace Smith '14, who locked up the #3 spot a year ago and posted a team-best 13-3 singles mark, is the odds-on favorite for #2.  After that, compeitition abounds with veterans Kiley Robbins '14, Nicki Softness '14, Kaitlyn Clark '14 and team co-captain Hannah Berkman '12 (right side photo) vying for the final four spots along with talented newcomer Lauren Jacobs '15, who is ranked among New England juniors.

Coming off a strong 11-6 season in 2010, including a 4-1 fall mark, the Cardinals expect to continue their solid play in 2011-12, seeking their seventh consecutive winning slate, all with double-digit victories.
