Women's Tennis Opens Fall Campaign with Victories over Simmons and Nichols Before Falling to Powerhouse Williams

Led by Hannah Berkman '12 and Grace Smith '14 (left-side photo), the Cardinals got the fall campaign off on the right foot with a solid 6-3 victory at Simmons Sat., Sept. 10.  The squad has defeated Simmons each time they have played over the last three seasons.  Wesleyan was right back on the courts Sun., Sept. 11, hosting Nichols in another non-conference outing.  Wesleyan prevailed again, 7-2, while competing on their newly surfaced US Open-style courts.

Berkman was the most resounding victor for the Cardinals against Simmons, copping a 6-2, 6-0 win at #6 singles and combining with Kaitlyn Clark '14 for an 8-2 win at #3 doubles.  Smith also accounted for two team points with her 6-4, 6-4 triumph at #2 singles and a 9-7 win at #2 doubles, paired with newcomer Lauren Jacobs '15 (right-side photo).  Also taking a singles point for the Cardinals was Jacobs at #4 singles, making her a two-point contributor while Kiley Robbins '14 snagged a tight win at #3 singles for the Cardinals' sixth team point.

Jacobs and Smith stayed unbeaten on the season as each posted a pair of victories in downing their Nichols rivals.  Their doubles win came by an 8-0 count while Smith won, 6-4, 6-1 in singles and Jacobs came up with a 6-1, 6-2 singles triumph.  Robbins, Clark and Berkman all picked up straight-set wins while Sarah Miller '13 and Robbins succeeded at #1 double, 8-2.

Jacobs and Smith made it 3-0 in doubles action with an exciting 8-6 victory at Williams in the Cardinals next outing against their NESCAC and Little Three adversary Sat., Sept. 17.  They were the only winners for Wesleyan, however, as national power Williams prevailed, 8-1.

The team has a pair of road matches this week as Wesleyan visits Mount Holyoke Wed., Sept. 21 before heading to Roger Williams Sun., Sept. 25 as the dual match portion of the fall starts to wind down.
