Eight Returning Letterwinners, Five Newcomers to Blend Together for Promising Women's Basketball in 2011-12

With the return of about two-thirds of the teams scoring and rebounding from the 2010-11 campaign, the Cardinals have a solid nucleus of veteran talent upon which to build in 2011-12.  The group of eight letterwinners back from a year ago accounted for 59 percent of the team's minutes, so their collective production in the scoring and rebounding areas exceeded their time on the floor, making them an efficient unit.  The influx of five sturdy freshmen will give the Cardinals a well-rounded lineup with additional size and speed.

Team captain Sam LaCroce '12 (#20, photo by SteveMcLaughlinPhotography.com) was third on the team in scoring and tops in rebounding while Eileen Gaffney '12 led in scoring and ranked second on the boards.  They are joined by Kendra Harris '13 and Emily Lippe '12 as the strength of the returning front-line players.  Guards Amber Wessells '14 and Jenna Klaes '14 will see plenty of action in 2011-12 after successful debut seasons with help from KellyAnn Rooney '14 and Sarah Doelger '14.

Newcomer Lily Donahue '15 brings more size to the floor than any previous Cardinal in program history with her 6-4 frame.  Both Jess Cherenza '15 and Dreisen Heath '15 are tournament tested as each helped their secondary-school squad make strong runs in their respective State of Rhode Island and Class D New England Prep playoffs.  The solid athletic ablility and saavy of Miller Hartsoe '15 and Cherkira Lashley '15 will earn them court time as well.

Wesleyan opens the year Fri. and Sat., Nov. 18 and 19 at SUNY Old Westbury, facing the host on the opening day, followed by SUNY Geneseo on Saturday.  The Cardinals then play Tues., Nov. 22 at Hunter before inaugurating the home schedule Sat., Nov. 26 against Baruch.
