Keith Buehler '14 (#13, main photo) broke a 2-2 tie with just 38 second left in the third period to push the Cardinals past Becker Fri., Dec. 30 in the first of two game for Wesleyan at the St. Michael's Holiday Classic. Wesleyan closes out play in the tournament Sat., Dec. 31, taking on Salve Regina, which dropped a 5-4 overtime decision to the host in the other opening-day contest. Wesleyan and St. Michael's are tied for first place in the tournament structure as both have four points with each picking up two points by winning two of three periods played and two additional points for winning their games. Saturday's contests will determine the tournament title as SMC faces Becker following the Wesleyan-Salve matchup.
Buehler connected with Geoff Mucha '13 and Nik Tasiopoulos '14 (#24, photo insert upper right) in the final minute of play to propel the Cardinals to victory over Becker. Goals by Tasiopoulos and John Guay '13 in the first period helped the Cardinals forge a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play. Becker came back to even the count with a pair of goals in the middle stanza before Buehler provided the game-winner with his fifth goal of the season. Tasiopoulos paces the squad in both goals (9) and points (14) this season following his two-point game.
In the Wesleyan net, Matt Hadge '13 turned aside 29 shots for a solid .935 save percentage as Wesleyan outshot Becker, 51-31, over the course of the outing. The Cardinals have a three-game win streak going and stand 6-3 overall on the year.
