Balanced Women's Basketball Earns Spot in Courtyard By Marriott Tourney Final with 76-32 Victory over UMPI
Wesleyan scored 17 consecutive points in a span of six minutes to extend an 8-4 lead with 15:20 to go in the first half to a 25-6 lead with 9:20 to go in the period and went on for a 76-32 triumph in the first round of the Courtyard By Marriott Tournament in Middletown Fri., Dec. 2. The Cardinals will face Anna Maria, a 61-51 winner over Worcester St., in the tournament finals Saturday.
Wesleyan shot 8-for-13 during the stretch with one turnover while UMPI was 0-for-3 from the field with seven turnovers. Wesleyan forced 33 UMPI turnovers in the game while collecting a school-record 26 steals as 12 different players had at least one take-away, led by Emily Lippe '12 with four.
The Cardinals pushed their first-half lead to as much as 23 (29-6) before holding a 39-18 margin at intermission. A 14-3 run to begin the second half spotted Wesleyan a 54-21 advantage with 13:10 to go and the gap never fell below 28. The final score represented the greatest difference in the contest. Every player for each team factored into the scoring. Leading Wesleyan with 10 points each were Miller Hartsoe '15 (#12, left side photo) and Kendra Harris '13 (#35, right side photo by SteveMcLaughlinPhotography.com). Sam LaCroce '12 grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Wesleyan in that department as the Cardinals enjoyed a 53-28 rebounding edge. Wesleyan's 28 offensive boards equaled the game output for the Owls.
This was the first-ever meeting of the two teams. When Wesleyan faced Anna Maria on Saturday, it will be just the fourth meeting of the squads and the first since the 1998-99 season. The Amcats have won three of the previous four tilts.
